Dr. Charl Els
Dr. Charl Els is a psychiatrist, addiction specialist, and medical review officer. At the University of Alberta, he is an Associate Clinical Professor in the Department of Psychiatry, and an adjunct faculty member in the Department of Medicine, as well as the John Dossetor Health Ethics Centre. Aside from his clinical practice, Charl is involved in training residents and medical students in the fields of occupational psychiatry and addiction medicine.
Charl also serves on the American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine Guideline Committee, and the University of Alberta's Health Research Ethics Board. He has authored more than 30 peer-reviewed publications, and is the first editor on a Health Canada-funded textbook on tobacco control, translated into French. He regularly conducts assessments on employees in safety-sensitive and decision-critical positions.
Charl completed two fellowships at the University of Toronto and the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health.
