Kelly is an adjunct professor in the Faculty of Business at the University of New Brunswick (UNB) and also acts as a part-time instructor in Trial Practice and Employment Law in the Faculty of Law. He teaches the UNB Workplace Investigations certificate course and has designed and implemented respectful workplace training programs for international organizations. His current research interests include employee claims motivations, dispute resolution models, workplace harassment, and accommodation of disabilities.
Kelly’s articles and commentaries have appeared in Workplace Today, Canadian HR Reporter, Journal of Commonwealth Law and Legal Education, Solicitors Journal, Canadian Labour & Employment Law Journal, The Canadian Bar Review, Canadian Arbitration and Mediation Journal, The Scribes Journal of Legal Writing, International Review of Human Rights Law, Law Teacher, and other publications. For many years, he was the law columnist on CBC’s national Business Network and has also been asked for commentary on employment law issues by CBC Radio (including The Current, a national program), CBC Television, CTV, Global Television, and numerous newspapers, including The Globe and Mail. His book, titled Why Employees Sue: Rethinking Approaches to the Resolution of Employment Conflicts, was published by Thompson Reuters in April 2017.
Kelly holds a Ph.D. and an LL.M. in Employment Law from the United Kingdom, an LL.B. from the University of New Brunswick, and a B.A. from the University of Prince Edward Island. He holds a Chartered Arbitrator designation from the ADR Institute of Canada.
