Karen Scott, LL.B., is the principle of Karen Scott Dispute Resolution Inc. Karen has been a respected adjudicator with the Alberta Human Rights Tribunal since her appointment in 2015. In that role she has issued over 50 reported decisions and conducted dozens of mediations of human rights complaints. Since 2021, she has also adjudicated professional disciplinary matters for the Real Estate Council of Alberta.
Karen holds certificates in Interpersonal Conflict Resolution and Interest Based Negotiation from the Alberta Arbitration and Mediation Society. She has been retained by numerous employers as a neutral third-party investigator to conduct workplace harassment investigations, and she has been retained by both employers and employees as a mediator in employment law matters. After graduating with distinction from the University of Alberta Law School, Karen clerked at the Alberta Court of Appeal and Court of King’s Bench. She then began a more than 20-year legal practice as counsel in the field of labour, employment, and human rights law. She has appeared as counsel before numerous labour arbitrators and the Alberta Labour Relations Board, as well as the Alberta Court of King’s Bench, the Alberta Court of Appeal, the Federal Court of Canada, and the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal. Karen has taught Employment Law at the University of Alberta Faculty of Law since 2017, and she is a frequent speaker on labour and employment issues for Lancaster House, the Canadian Bar Association, and the Legal Education Society of Alberta. In her new role, Karen is stepping down as legal counsel role to commence a full time Arbitration, Mediation, and Workplace Investigation practice effective May 1, 2024.
At home, Karen is most often found running, hiking, skiing, or kayaking with her active family and her dog, Teddy.
