Alex Brat is the Senior Executive Director of Labour Relations at the University of Toronto, where he leads a team of labour relations professionals who are responsible for negotiating and administering collective agreements covering more than 20,000 unionized employees in 25 bargaining units represented by 10 unions, including the Canadian Union of Public Employees, the Ontario Public Service Employees Union, the United Steelworkers, and Unifor. He works with senior human resources leaders to develop and implement strategies, policies, and procedures, and he provides support to senior administration and faculty members. Alex has over 25 years of human resources and labour relations experience, having worked with large, multi-stakeholder organizations within the higher education, professional services, and manufacturing sectors. He has particular expertise in the areas of labour relations and collective bargaining, strategy development and alignment, change management, organizational effectiveness, and team building. Alex also teaches human resources and labour relations courses in the Master of Industrial Relations and Human Resources program at the University of Toronto’s Centre for Industrial Relations and Human Resources.Prior to joining the University of Toronto, Alex held senior leadership positions in human resources and labour relations within management consulting, aerospace, and automotive industries, including at Capgemini, Bombardier Aerospace, and Ford of Canada. He has also acted as chief spokesperson and strategist in numerous rounds of collective bargaining in both the private and broader public sectors.
