Frank Demont is a mediator and arbitrator working in Atlantic, Canada, principally, but not exclusively, in labour and employment matters. A graduate of Dalhousie Law School in 1989, Frank has been practising law in Nova Scotia since being called to the Nova Scotia bar in 1990.
Not unlike many rural practitioners, his career has involved most areas of law, from criminal, family, property, litigation, corporate and commercial, employment and labour, and municipal law. He has appeared in all levels of court, including several appearances in the Supreme Court of Canada. Notable cases include: R. v. Curragh Inc., et al; R. v. New Glasgow (Town) 2008 NSPC 15; R. v. Borden (1994).
In 2013, Frank began taking on mediation and arbitration matters and has transitioned his practice to that work almost exclusively. He was a vice-chair of the Nova Scotia Labour Board from 2016 to 2022, and has been on the “Minister’s List of Arbitrators” for Nova Scotia since 2013. He was inducted as a member of the Canadian Academy of Distinguished Neutrals in January, 2023.
Frank served as president of the Barristers’ Society in 2018 to 2019, and he currently serves as Nova Scotia’s representative on the Council of the Federation of Law Societies of Canada.
