He/Him

Aubrey Gonsalves has been president of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) Local 2316 since 2008, representing bargaining unit workers at the Children’s Aid Society of Toronto. Aubrey received his B.A. and B.S.W from York University and began work at the Children’s Aid Society of Toronto as a Family Service Worker. Aubrey is also the Chair of CUPE Ontario Social Services Workers’ Coordinating Committee, representing workers in community agencies, child care, developmental services, children’s aid societies, and municipal social services by addressing, raising, and resolving issues, concerns, and challenges, as well as recommending improvements to services in these sectors.

Prior to working at the Children’s Aid Society, Aubrey worked with youth in several forums, from facilitating workshops at the Toronto Youth Assessment Centre in the Mimico Correctional Centre to working directly with youth gangs in Toronto, with a focus on preventing violence in the community, by resolving disputes through mediation. He is a relentless and passionate advocate for working together, regardless of differences, to achieve more as a people and a society. Aubrey’s focus on this principle is what drives him to be a part of numerous committees and initiatives that fight for anti-racism and social justice. Aubrey was recently elected to the CUPE National Executive Board as Diversity Vice-President for Black and Racialized Workers, part of his work in this role will be to implement the Anti-Racism Strategy adopted by CUPE members at the 2021 National Convention.
