Derek Dobson is a seasoned pension expert with more than 30 years of industry experience. Currently leading one of Canada’s most sustainable pension plans, he sits as a member of the Pension Policy Council at C.D. Howe Institute and served as co-chair of the Canadian Public Pension Leadership Council (CPPLC). He is a founding faculty member of the Masters of Trust Management Standards at the International Foundation of Employee Benefits and Pensions (IFEBP) and former board member at the Association of Canadian Pension Management (ACPM).

Under his leadership, CAAT opened modern defined benefit (DB) pension coverage to all industries across Canada and to date has earned the support of 21 unions and associations. Over 370 employers currently participate in the CAAT Plan, including Brink’s Canada, Sanofi Pasteur, Rio Tinto Alcan, and Canadian Coalition for Good Governance.

Derek received the 2019 ACPM Industry Award and 2023 Institutional Connect Lifetime Achievement Award for his creativity in addressing the challenges in Canada’s retirement income system. He passionately advocates for innovative solutions to improve access to efficient, high-performing pensions.
