Gabriel Somjen, K.C., is an arbitrator who previously practised labour and employment law at a major firm in Vancouver. He is experienced in all areas of labour and employment law, including labour board matters (provincial and federal), employment standards claims, human rights claims, wrongful dismissal claims, and negotiating and drafting employment contracts and collective agreements. Gabriel is also experienced in providing preventive and proactive advice regarding workplace issues and conflicts, the mitigation and resolution of workplace conflicts, and arbitration and mediation. A listed arbitrator for both the Collective Agreement Arbitration Bureau for British Columbia and the British Columbia International Commercial Arbitration Centre, as well as a mediator with Mediate BC, Gabriel often presides as chair in labour arbitrations and mediations. He has appeared before the B.C. Labour Relations Board, the Canada Industrial Relations Board, the B.C. Supreme Court, the B.C. Court of Appeal, labour arbitration boards, and other administrative tribunals.
Gabriel holds a B.A. (1969) and a J.D. (1974) from the University of Toronto. He was called to the British Columbia Bar in 1975.
