James Farrell is a Solicitor and Staff Representative with the Fish, Food and Allied Workers-Unifor (FFAW-Unifor) in St. John’s, Newfoundland, where he represents members in fish-processing plants and in the industrial, retail, and offshore sectors. Prior to joining FFAW-Unifor, James was Legal Counsel to the Memorial University of Newfoundland Faculty Association. James articled and practised law with the City of Calgary after working as a labour relations advisor in the public sector.
James has appeared at provincial and appellate courts and has experience in grievance arbitration and a variety of federal and provincial regulatory proceedings. James advises on all areas of labour law, including discipline and discharge matters, contract negotiation, pensions and benefits, workplace investigations, and disability management.
James holds a BComm. (Co-op) and a B.A. in Political Science from Memorial University and a J.D. from the University of Calgary. He is a member of the Canadian Association of Labour Lawyers. James was called to the Alberta Bar prior to being called to the Newfoundland and Labrador Bar in 2016.
