James Fu is the National Leader of Borden Ladner Gervais (BLG) LLP’s Pensions and Benefits Group and is also a partner in BLG’s Labour and Employment Group. James brings a wealth of experience in pensions law, providing strategic advice to plan sponsors, administrators, and service providers on a broad range of matters. These include pension and benefits plan set-ups, plan mergers, transfer of plan assets and liabilities, due diligence, letters of credit, change of trustees and custodians, funding disputes, surplus applications and withdrawals, and strategic consideration in corporate transactions including the establishment or termination of retirement income plans in purchase and sale transactions. He has worked on over 350 corporate transactions. Among other transactions in 2024 involving James’ expert advice, James was part of the BLG team representing KDDI Canada, Inc. on its $1.35 billion acquisition of three data centers from Allied Properties REIT and representing Occidental Petroleum in its $1.1 billion acquisition of Carbon Engineering.

James regularly contributes to pensions and benefits law thought leadership, including authoring an article about the Bill C-228 changes.

Beyond his client work, James is active in professional organizations, including the Pensions and Benefits Executive at the Canadian Bar Association and the National Policy Committee at the Association of Canadian Pension Management, where he contributes to thought leadership and policy development. He also dedicates time to community initiatives, serving in leadership and volunteer roles.
