Dr. Marina Afanasyeva is a specialist in Occupational Medicine as well as Public Health and Preventive Medicine. She serves as a Medical Consultant with the Ontario Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development (MLITSD). She also provides occupational medicine consultations to other organizations.
Dr. Afanasyeva holds academic appointments as an Adjunct Lecturer at the University of Toronto (U of T) Dalla Lana School of Public Health, an Adjunct Professor at the University of Ottawa School of Epidemiology and Public Health, and a Clinical Adjunct Professor at the U of T Temerty Faculty of Medicine. She is actively involved in teaching residents in Occupational Medicine and in Public Health and Preventive Medicine (PHPM) and is a member of the curriculum development committee for the U of T Occupational Medicine Residency Program. Dr. Afanasyeva has also contributed as an examiner for both the PHPM exam board and the Occupational Medicine exam board of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.
She is the past chair of the Ontario Medical Association Section on Occupational and Environmental Medicine and serves as a member of the National Advisory Committee on Infection Prevention and Control. She is a co-investigator on a research grant examining factors affecting the health of women in the Canadian Armed Forces and is a member of the Canadian Medical Association’s Return-to-Work Guidance Working Group.
Prior to joining MLITSD, Dr. Afanasyeva practised as an occupational medicine physician at Humber River Hospital and with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. She completed her specialty training in PHPM at the University of Ottawa, followed by subspecialty training in Occupational Medicine at the U of T. Dr. Afanasyeva holds a Master of Public Health (MPH) and a Ph.D. in Molecular Microbiology and Immunology from Johns Hopkins University, where she was inducted into the Delta Omega Honorary Public Health Society (Alpha Chapter) in recognition of academic excellence. She earned her medical degree with distinction and completed an internship in internal medicine in Belarus. She has co-authored more than 30 publications, including book chapters.
