Matthew L.O. Certosimo is a lawyer with Borden Ladner Gervais LLP (BLG), certified by the Law Society of Ontario as a Specialist in Labour Law. From 2011 to 2016, he was the National Leader of BLG’s Labour and Employment Group. Matthew frequently appears before the courts, including at the appellate level. He counsels and acts on behalf of private and public sector employers in labour relations and employment law, including wrongful dismissal litigation, labour arbitrations, collective bargaining, human rights complaints, and charges under the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
From 1996 to 2011, Matthew was an adjunct professor in employment law at the University of Toronto, and he has chaired and spoken at numerous labour and employment law conferences. Matthew is the co-author of Just Cause: The Law of Summary Dismissal in Canada (Canada Law Book, 1998); editor-in-chief of Executive Employment (Federated Press); assistant editor of Canadian Cases on Employment Law – a national law report series (Carswell); and author of Ontario Employment and Labour Law & Commentary (LexisNexis) and Federal Employment and Labour Law & Commentary (LexisNexis). He has been recognized in Chambers Global, Chambers Canada, The Best Lawyers in Canada, The Legal 500 Canada, and The Lexpert/American Lawyer Guide to the Leading 500 Lawyers in Canada for employment law and labour law. He is a member of the Canadian Bar Association and the American Bar Association.
Matthew holds an LL.B. from Dalhousie Law School (1993) and a B.A. (Hons.) from Wilfrid Laurier University (1988). He was called to the Ontario Bar in 1995.
