Patrick Nugent practises in his own law firm in Edmonton, where he acts for trade unions and employees before arbitration boards, labour boards, and all levels of court. He has been teaching labour arbitration in the Faculty of Law at the University of Alberta since 2004 and previously taught constitutional law.

Patrick has served on the executive of the Labour and Employment and Constitutional Law sections of the Canadian Bar Association and has presented at many seminars and conferences on topics including prisoner voting, video surveillance in the workplace, and the rules of evidence.

Patrick holds an LL.B. from the University of Alberta. He was called to the Alberta Bar in 1998 and the Northwest Territories Bar in 2009.
