Steve Penney is a partner at Stewart McKelvey in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador. Steve’s practice focuses on employer-side labour and employment, and civil litigation, particularly in the areas of municipal law, professional negligence, and commercial disputes.

Steve has appeared on three occasions in the Supreme Court of Canada, including on the landmark administrative law case: Newfoundland Nurses v. Newfoundland. Steve has been counsel for the employer in a number of significant labour arbitrations, labour board hearings, and judicial reviews in the offshore oil and gas industry, the fishery, university faculty relations, the municipal sector, and the construction industry.

Steve is a graduate of Queen’s University (B.A., 1994) and Osgoode Hall Law School (LL.B., 1997). Steve has received numerous accolades, including Best Lawyers designations in labour and employment, administrative and public law, and municipal law, and being named a Benchmark Canada, local litigation star on several occasions, and a Lexpert Rising Stars Leading Lawyer Under 40 in 2010.
