The Honourable Ritu Khullar is the 10th Chief Justice of Alberta. She was appointed Chief Justice of the Court of Appeal of Alberta, the Court of Appeal for the Northwest Territories, and the Court of Appeal of Nunavut in November 2022. Chief Justice Khullar served as an appeal judge on those courts for nearly five years before her appointment. She also served for a year on the Court of King’s Bench of Alberta.

Chief Justice Khullar practised public law litigation in Edmonton for 25 years and was involved in many other initiatives including: independent chair at the Education Institution for Women to hear serious disciplinary offences; member of the Federal Electoral Boundaries Commission 2002 to 2003; Boards of the Alberta Law Reform Institute and Centre for Constitutional Studies. She taught as a sessional lecturer at the University of Alberta Law Faculty for 14 years. Since her appointment to the bench, Chief Justice Khullar has remained active in legal education through her work with the National Judicial Institute, the Canadian Institute for the Administration of Justice, and the Advisory Council for the Legal Education Society of Alberta.

Chief Justice Khullar has degrees from the University of Alberta and the University of Toronto. She was appointed Queen’s Counsel (now King’s Counsel) in 2014.
